the outhouse

Once again, we had great plans for this room but quickly ran out of energy. After scrubbing every surface, I was itching to paint the whole room white. I still think white would make the room (especially with the black rubber floor that was installed right before we moved in) but I was vetoed. Alas, the only work (besides cleaning) that was done in this room was by someone else.
As you can see in the before pictures, the tub surround was thin white metal that had begun to pull away from the wall. We suspected the mice were coming in behind the tub surround so our handyman came and ripped up the whole thing. There were a few holes where ants were coming in but none big enough for mice. He replaced the surround with Mgo board. If you squint enough, it looks like travertine.
He also replaced the garden hose-like shower head with a really nice rain shower head. Now we can imagine that we are in a Holiday Inn (just don't look down at the rusty tub and scary drain)!

We also added some lighting to the room. The only light came from the window and this bare bulb:
We clipped one of our old bedside table lamps to the window sill and voila! a spotlight right in your face every morning to wake you up!

street hockey

Let's just hope he doesn't come home with missing teeth.

(in case you couldn't tell, that's a black eye right there - or Cleopatra make-up)

our bedroom

We had grand plans for this room (paint the floor, ceiling and walls) but of course, once we moved our stuff in, it didn't seem so bad. We hung some thrifted curtains over the windows and used a Target tablecloth for the closet door. When my mom was here, she painted the doors and shelves which made the biggest impact in the room. Once we put some of our favorite things on the shelves (robust owls and snowglobes), the place started to feel like home.

Oscar at the seashore

For the long weekend, we decided to get out of town and head to the beach! We went to Port Aransas which wasn't quite as picturesque as we thought it would be. Our hotel was extremely sketchy on the outside but it had the most comfortable bed I've slept in in a long time.
(this is our hotel, no lie)

This was Oscar's first visit to the ocean and, after a little hesitation, he fell in love. He had a blast chasing seaweed and digging in the sand.
