the kitchen

I just realized that I've never shown any 'before' pictures of the shack (or many 'after' ones for that matter). I'll start off with the kitchen. The one and only positive thing about this kitchen is the window. A car ran into this side of the shack a few years ago and they had to replace the siding and window. It is the only window in the whole shack that opens. It's got a lovely view of the highway but now that the wildflowers are growing, we can't even see the concrete.
The stove continues to be the bain of my existence. The rats are gone for good (we hope) but now the oven is broken. Having an oven with one temperature is better than no oven at all. Apparently some fuse thingy is broken and there's no hope to fix it. We've had to rely on my toaster oven (which broils fine but does not bake evenly - one side is totally burnt while the other is perfect). At least the stove top works (for now).

a little better

Here is another project mom and I worked on while she was here. This is our one and only kitchen cabinet. For weeks I refused to put anything down there because it was so creepy. Mom made a trip to Home Depot and picked up some flooring remnants, brackets and some wood. A couple of screws and the whole cabinet is usable now!

This morning, while I was getting breakfast ready, I heard rustling coming from the cabinet. Thank goodness for see-through doors or I would have really been freaked out!

remember the alamo!

We had a fun day trip to San Antonio this weekend. We met up with a studio mate of Nick's and he gave us the grand tour. We did a few touristy things (the Alamo and the River Walk) but we also went to South Town (which is like Austin's South Congress but not as busy). All in all, I loved San Antonio and Nick was meh about it. To be fair, my passion for San Antonio is primarily centered around a little bistro called La Frite that has waterzooi on the menu. While in Belguim for two summers, my grandparents and I ate at the Belle Epoque (or the Belly Pop as my grandfather called it) at least twice a week and I always ordered waterzooi.

For the architecture people that read this blog: Friday night, STEALTH lectured at the center. If you haven't seen their work, you should definitely check them out.

one corner down

When my mom was here a few weeks ago, she painted all of our doors. She did a fantastic job on all the doors but the biggest difference can be seen on our bedroom door. At some point in time, someone had changed a double door to one door and shelves. It's amazing what a difference paint can make in a room!To the right of the dresser, you can see the curtains that my mom and I made. We turned one large thrifted panel into 2 smaller floor length curtains (the other one covers the window over our bed). I love these little shelves now - mainly because I now have a place for my snow globe collection!
